👤 A note from the founder

Hey, I'm Brian, though a lot of people know me as Maddog. I started OHS Social when I was 15, still in high school, just messing around and building something I thought was cool. I never really expected to still be tinkering with it all these years later, but here we are. It's honestly always been one of my favorite things to work on.

I've owned and run it on and off for over a decade now. Life pulled me away from it more than once, and at one point I even lost the domain. So in 2025, when I finally managed to get the original name back, I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it: start fresh and rebuild the whole thing from the ground up.

What you're using now is that rebuild. Same heart it always had, just dusted off and brought back for a new era of the web. Thanks for being here. I hope you make yourself at home. 🖤

OHS Social is a small, independent social network built to bring back the spirit of the early-2000s web — customizable profiles, real friends lists, live chat rooms, and pages that feel like yours. No engagement algorithm. No creepy tracking. No endless feed engineered to keep you scrolling. Just a place to hang out, make a profile you're proud of, and actually talk to people.

✨ What you can do here

  • Build a profile that's truly yours. A live, drag-and-drop layout builder arranges your cards into single-column, sidebar, multi-column, masonry, or header-banner layouts. Pick a theme or design your own (Donors only!).
  • Hang out in live chat & cam rooms. Host your own public or private room (password protected, hidden, invite-only options). Text chat plus multi-cam video rooms (built on WebRTC — peer-to-peer, right in the browser, no plugins) with their own moderation and layouts.
  • Set a chat nickname that shows next to your messages while your username stays in the userlist.
  • Make friends, sign guestbooks, post bulletins, share galleries, react, and send private messages — the social basics, done the way they used to feel.

🛠️ How it's built

This site runs on a lightweight, self-contained PHP codebase designed for ordinary shared hosting. There's no database server to configure — all data lives in simple flat files on disk, so it's fast, portable, and easy to back up. The platform is modular: a stable core handles profiles, friends, messaging, and chat/cam rooms, with optional add-ons layering on extra features. No third-party trackers, no ad networks.
